Special Needs Committee Update
On Wednesday, Wednesday, September 17, the SRVSD hosted a free parent education seminar titled “Parenting Anxious Teens/Pre-teens”. This presentation was applicable to all children of all age and developmental levels and provided insightful information and useful strategies including the signs to look for that indicate that your child may need help, helping your child separate from their anxiety, helping your child make small steps toward facing their fears, and how to collaborate with your child. Wednesday, October 8th: “Anxiety, Attention, Learning and Behavioral Challenges”. Please join developmental and behavioral pediatrician, Dr. Brad Berman, for an important discussion concerning how these important issues that impact both the home and school life of our children.
October is Dyslexia Awareness Month
Dyslexia is the most common learning difference (1 in 5 children), yet the most publicly misunderstood.
Saturday, October 11, 10am-12pm: "The Big Picture: Rethinking Dyslexia" film screening. Please join Northern California Branch of the International Dyslexia Association (NCBIDA) for a screening of "The Big Picture: Rethinking Dyslexia," a film directed by James Redford. The film recounts the experiences of children and young adults with dyslexia, including Redford's son, Dylan, and features interviews with highly successful individuals with dyslexia, such as Sir Richard Branson, Gavin Newsom, Charles Schwab, and David Boies. The 52 minute film will be followed by a short panel discussion and audience question-and-answer session. No registration is required.
: "I'm Rubber, You're Glue: Teaching Kids Emotional Strength & Self-Advocacy" Kristen Caven and Dr. Louise Hart will share specific parenting tips to help you identify and practice skills to help your school-smart child become a life-smart citizen, your timid and fearful child become confident and comfortable, and your struggling passive learner become a determined invested learner, regardless of the age.
