Week 13 Newsletter

Week 13 Newsletter

What a week full of creativity in P2! Please ask your child about Georges Seraut and what kind of art he created. What colors did he not use?

-We continued module 2 in our Eureka mathematics curriculum this week. The focus of module 2 is to continue to build fluency to and introduce place value understanding. Place value is understanding that I can use the ‘power of 10’ to help me solve many different math equations. This week we focused on subtracting and using a friendly 10 to help us when we subtract teen numbers. For example, when solving 12-9 we know that 12 is made up of 10 and 2. We can use that 10 to subtract 9 and get 1. We then use that 1 and add it to the additional 2 which equals 3. We are taking slow steps with this process as the notion of making 10 is extremely important. Our kiddos are rocking it so far! If you need extra support with this module please see the math resources page on our homework website: https://firstgradetassajara.weebly.com

-This week we continued writing our own non-fiction books about topics we know all about! From mindfulness to being healthy and how to be a youtuber…we sure are experts on tons of topics! This week we wrote our books as if our reader knows nothing about our topic. We are focusing on explaining everything so there are no questions after someone were to read our books. Taking small steps and showing detail is key across all first grade writing units.

-In reader’s workshop we continued our work with becoming a word detective! We are getting closer and closer to cracking the case each week. This week we focused on vowel teams (2 vowels next to each other, eg. -oa in boat). We identified vowel teams, sorted vowel teams and we now know that when two vowels are next to each other the first vowel is the sound heard.

-In word work this week we practiced writing glued sounds and double letters. We know when a vowel is short we often need a double consonant (e.g. kiss, fill). We also began investigating glued sounds (one sound that is glued together) like -all.

-In science we are beginning to study about light and shadows. The key concept of this unit is knowing that a shadow is a blocking of light. We had so much fun playing and creating our own shadows!
