About the Teacher

I am thrilled to be your child’s teacher this year! I have been teaching for over 25 years - most of those here at Tassajara Hills Elementary. I live here in town with my husband, Dave. We have two children, Lauren and Dan, who attended SRVUSD schools. Lauren lives in San Francisco and teaches fifth grade. Dan just graduated from law school and is working for a firm in San Francisco. My family is growing as Dan & his wife, Melissa, are expecting a baby in October. When I am not in the classroom, I enjoy spending time with my family, traveling, reading and walking/hiking in the great outdoors.

Dear Parents,

Welcome back and Happy New Year to all! I hope the break gave you lots of time to enjoy family & friends as well as time to rest and relax. As we transition back I just wanted to send out some information and friendly reminders to give us a great, fresh start to 2019. I have also added some photos of some of our December activities!

Students are responsible for reading 20 minutes and filing out their reading log each night as well as a their math homework paper Monday through Thursday. One of the math pages should be substituted for a session on Dreambox - your child can choose what day works best for them. Parents, please always feel free to reach out and let me know if homework is taking longer than suggested 30 minutes a night. The ultimate goal with our homework practice is to build responsible and independent students who can manage their homework papers in their homework folders, turning it in on time.

1st Grade Lindsey Wildlife Experience Field Trip

First graders will be going to the Lindsey Wildlife Experience on Wednesday, February 20. Permission slips will go home next week.

2nd Grade Lawrence Hall of Science Field Trip

Our second field trip of the year will be Friday February 1st. We will be leaving school at 8:45 and returning by 2:00. Permission slips will be coming home in homework folders this afternoon. Please fill out permission slips and return them by Friday, January 8th.

2nd Grade CogAT Testing

The CogAT test (or the Cognitive Abilities Test) is an assessments we do each year in second grade in preparation for placing GATE students for 3rd grade.  To help students do their best, on testing days please make sure that your child is well rested and has eaten a healthy breakfast. The schedule for second grade CogAT testing is as follows:

  • Jan. 28-Feb. 1: Practice Test (Teaching Students Test Taking Skills)

  • Feb. 4-8: Actual Test

  • Feb. 11-13: Make-up Test

Computer Lab

We have been working in Microsoft Paint. The students drew a self-portrait and then copied & pasted the picture into a Word Document. They then typed something about themselves. They were happy to see how the project looked after we printed them! Last week we learned about writing code and they loved the two programs we used. I have added a link to the fantastic Code website that we used. I urge you to have your child show you how they wrote code for Candy Quest!

1st grade is finishing Module 2 where we have been working on building fluency and developing an understanding of place value. Students have learned to Read, Draw, Write for all of their word problems. This is where they read the problem, draw a picture to represent the parts & the whole, write an equation, and finally write a statement answering the question posed. We are on track to finish this module and take the assessment next week.

2nd graders are finishing up Module 4 where they are building a conceptual understanding of adding and subtracting multi-digit numbers to 200 and applying their skills when solving problems. They have learned regrouping using a place value chart, unbundling tens & ones when needed. Students will take the end module assessment next week.

Reading & Writing - Both 1st & 2nd graders are working on nonfiction units of study in reading and writing. They are learning about different text features (headings, captions, diagrams, table of contents, etc). Students are using their knowledge from their nonfiction reading to create their own nonfiction books. They are using a graphic organizer to start their All About Books which has helped to keep the subject in focus and the books more detailed. Second graders are also working with a partner to create a non-fiction poster which they will share with the class.

1st graders are studying about light and shadows. The key concept of this unit is knowing that a shadow is a blocking of light.

2nd graders are finishing landforms and will be making their volcanos this week!
