Welcome to the 2020-2021 School Year!
Welcome to the 2020-2021 School Year!
"In this together"

Hello D8 Families,

Welcome to 4th Grade! My name is Skip Hourigan, and I'm looking forward to my 22nd year teaching here at Tassajara Hills. I'm very excited to “meet” each of your children on Thursday, August 13th (minimum day schedule; 8:00-12:30). Fourth grade is an important "transitional" year, since the students take on more responsibility as "upper grade" students. I'm a strong believer in viewing your child's educational experience (especially this year) as a "group effort," and I look forward to working with you and your child this year. If you have any questions or concerns, or would like to say hello, please feel free to contact me via email ( Please take a moment to check out and bookmark our class website. I will be posting reminders and updates here throughout the year.

What will we be learning this year?

Writer's Workshop- During our first writing unit of the year, students will learn the art of crafting a realistic fiction piece.

Reader's Workshop- This year, we will begin our reader's workshop reading fictional novels. During each workshop, students will learn new strategies to help them become stronger readers. As a class, we will read “Tiger Rising” to help us practice these reading strategies together. Students will complete an online independent reading log, that coincides with what we've learned in class.

Social Studies- 4th grade social studies is all about California and our wonderful history! We will start the year learning about the location of our state, the different regions within our state, and then learn about the Native Californians.

Science- We will begin the year learning about the energy of motion in the science lab.

Math- In our first module (chapter), students will extend their work with whole numbers, first with familiar large units (hundreds and thousands), and then develop their understanding up to 1 million. They practice and further deepen their facility with patterns in the base-10 number system.

Sanford Harmony- As part of our Morning Meeting each day, our class will engage in a “Meet Up” so that we can learn about each other and create our “classroom community.” In addition, our class will participate in a Sanford Harmony Lesson. Our first unit is 4 lessons, focusing on Diversity and Inclusion.
