ABOUT THE TEACHER

Hi! My name is Lori King and I am very excited to begin teaching my 18th year at Tassajara Hills Elementary School. I taught first grade for seven years, second grade for three, third grade for three, and this will be my fifth year teaching fourth grade.

I have been happily married to my husband Danny for 28 years and we have two wonderful kids. Our daughter Rachel is a busy college student and our son Ryan is a United States Marine. We also have an amazing daughter-in-law, Marlo. This summer, my husband and I went back to Virginia and spent two weeks pampering our beloved grandson Theo who turned two in April. We also added a sightseeing adventure to Boston and Washington D.C..

Teaching is my passion and a dream come true!

Book Order: If you are interested please place your orders by tomorrow at 3. Students brought home packets this week.

Math Test Tomorrow: Students will take our Mid-Module Math Test tomorrow in class. While working on tonight's math homework, students should refer to their class notes/study guide we completed together in class. Their test tomorrow is VERY similar to the sheet we completed together in class.

Report Cards: Your child's Report Card will go home TOMORROW. I would appreciate it if you could take a few moments and review with your child "their report card." I am very proud of all my students hard work and amazing growth this past semester. I would especially like you to review any behavioral concerns with your child. If you have any questions or concerns please let me know.

Parent Overnight Meeting- PLEASE mark your calendars! On Wednesday, February 5th at 6:30 pm the 4th grade teachers will host a brief informational meeting about our overnight field trip to The Sierra Outdoor School/ Columbia. This meeting will be in the library. The field trip will take place May 18th and 19th. We find it very important for at least 1 parent to join us on this evening, if you have not had a student attend this field trip before. We will pass out paperwork and answer all your questions. If you cannot attend, please let me know ahead of time. This is a very fun and educational trip, We want all of our students to join us on this great 4th grade experience! Please do NOT bring your student with you to this meeting.

JANUARY NEWS

Cool weather…  NFL playoffs (YEAH NINERS)…  New Year’s resolutions…  It must be January!  Welcome to 2020!  I hope everyone had a fun and restful winter vacation.  As we begin the second half of the school year, the students know that my expectations for them continue to rise as we go through the year, and January marks the point when we expect to see students becoming more independent and responsible for their own learning.

WELCOME to our new student, Grace Kingston, who moved here from Ireland. Today was her first day and she did great!

Writer's Workshop- After completing their California Mission informational reports, the students will be crafting another opinion essay, focused on their “favorite holiday tradition.”

Reader's Workshop- We’ll continue reading our class book, “Operation Redwood,” and will also begin our “Historical Fiction” unit. As a class, we’ll be reading “Island of the Blue Dolphins.” At school and home, students will read their own “historical fiction” books, and complete the weekly online reading log that coincides with and reinforces the strategies we’re learning in our class mini-lessons.

Social Studies- After we complete our study of the California Mission System, we’ll begin our unit on “Mexican California” and Settlers, including Ranchos and Land Grants.

Science- Students will continue learning about Earth’s features and the effects of wind and water erosion on the landscape by studying how the Grand Canyon formed, in our current module, “Time Traveling Tour Guides.”

Math- In Math, we’ll continue our work in Module 5: Fraction Equivalence, Ordering, and Operations.

Sanford Harmony- We’ll continue to “Meet Up” and “Buddy Up” most days, and in our new unit, “Communication,” students will learn how to increase their understanding of healthy and unhealthy communication patterns, identify their own communication styles, and develop effective ways of engaging with others.
