Week 20 Newsletter

Week 20 Newsletter

What a fun week in P2! We learned all about Martin Luther King Jr. and how he helped change our world!

-We continued through our Eureka math, unit 3! We are learning about measurement, graphing and tally marks in this short unit. The focus of this week was learning about measuring, why we measure, how to measure including measuring objects all around us with rulers and measuring cube sticks! We learned about precision, what 1/2 of a number means and how to line up our measuring tools edge to edge.  If you need extra support with this module please see the math resources page on our homework website: https://firstgradetassajara.weebly.com

-In writer’s workshop this week, we began our opinion writing unit! We started slow and talked about what an opinion in and how we all have them! We read a fan favorite, Don’t Let the Pigeon Stay Up Late and wrote our own opinion pieces if we think the Pigeon should go to bed or stay up late and why. We focused on writing at least three reasons to support our opinion.

-In reader’s workshop we continued our reader’s workshop unit - becoming the boss of our reading! We learned new strategies to help us take charge of a reading. Some of these strategies include: paying attention to all sight words and knowing we can’t sound out most of those tricky sight words!

-In word work this week we learned about suffixes and how to make a word plural. This week we focused on the suffix -s and practiced writing words such as: bugs, ships, balls, etc. We know that sometimes the suffix s can sound like z but we know it’s a s and not a z!

-In science we are studying about day and night rotations in addition to the earth position in the solar system!
