Developing Good Habits

I encourage you to help your student develop good habits early in the school year.  Listed below are a few suggestions to help you start the year off right:

  • Establish an appropriate bedtime so that your student is well rested and ready for school each day
  • Set up a quiet work area for your student to do their homework daily
  • Read together daily; this is necessary for your student to develop into a proficient reader
  • Send a nutritious snack for morning recess and a sack lunch, lunch money, or have your student use a lunch debit card that you have already placed money on by clinking the link .
  • Label all coats, sweaters, etc. with student’s name
  • Help your child keep their desk organized by sending only requested supplies to school

Classroom Volunteers

Classroom volunteers are very much appreciated and welcome to help in our class.  However, all volunteers must first ensure they have completed the online volunteer clearance through "Be A Mentor".  This applies to any type of volunteers, even for classroom celebrations. If you have completed a clearance last year, it should still be in place, as long as you have updated your current auto insurance (for driver volunteers).  For parents that have not yet completed the online process, it takes just a few minutes to fill out, via a link on our school website; use the link for volunteer management system.  Our class schedule, for volunteer sign ups, will be available the second week of school. Our class will use the Sign-up Genius system.  I know your time is valuable and I appreciate your support.

E2 Weekly Update

January 18, 2019

Dear Parents,

This week we discussed Dr. Martin Luther King's important life and work and reflected on how we could speak up for what we believe in, in a peaceful way. We looked at the differences between his childhood and our own, which prompted great conversations as a group. A reminder that Monday January 21st there is no school in observance of Martin Luther King Jr.

This week we also started our opinion writing unit, beginning with choosing one of our favorite texts from our classroom library with a character that stuck out the most to us. We then had a great discussion about our opinions on each character in the text.

In math we focused on solving two and three digit addition and subtraction problems using multiple strategies including the arrow method, number bonds and tape diagrams. It was an important week of review for these strategies. Students were able to reunite with strategies that worked best for them.

Students focused on R-controlled vowels er, ir, ur, ar and or in Wilson Phonics this week. Students had fun looking for R-controlled vowel words in their books during reading.

In Readers Workshop this week students worked with their reading partners to practice fluency in their reading. The class goal was to read aloud with the same fluency as we speak to one another. Students focused on punctuation and context clues to understand the characters feeling. Students then rehearsed reading passages and performed them in front of our reading buddies.

In science lab this week students completed their volcanoes with Mrs. Ertola. Students will be bringing their volcanoes home today along with a baggy of baking soda for at home eruption. Have fun!

CogAt testing is February 4th -8th. This test is given to identify GATE students for next year. If you do not want your child to participate please send me an email by Friday, January 25th.

I hope everyone has a great long weekend!

Sincerely,

Ms. Stockman

This year, the Children's Discovery Museum of San Jose will be hosting "Secret Agent Science" -- a hands-on science festival -- at our school on Thursday, February 21. To avoid crowding, we will have two separate sessions: 5:30-6:45pm for grades K-2; and 6:45-8:00pm for grades 3-5. Families with mixed-grade students may choose whichever one session to attend. Capacity is limited, so please reserve your spot early: online via the FutureFund website. A voluntary donation of $10 per child is kindly requested to cover the cost of this event. Only children (students & siblings) need to sign up; adults and babies-in-arm attend for free.

Yearbook Needs Your Help!

Happy 2019! We are putting together the yearbook and many pages are still missing volunteers. Without your help, we will not be able to include them in the yearbook. Please check out the Sign-Up Genius for more details. If you have any pictures you would like to submit for the yearbook, please email us and put the page you are submitting your photo to in the subject line.

All About Ms. Stockman

Hello! Welcome to 2nd grade and to the new school year.

I am so excited for another wonderful year at Tassajara Hills Elementary!  I look forward to an amazing year full of exploration, fun, and growth! Here's a little bit about me.

I graduated from San Francisco State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies with an emphasis in Multicultural Studies. After my undergraduate education, I attended graduate school at the Notre Dame de Namur in Belmont where I earned my Elementary Teaching Credential and Master's Degree in Curriculum and Instruction.

I have been teaching for 7 years and have taught in a variety of grade levels from kindergarten to fourth grade in the bay area.  I am a bay area native, growing up in Half Moon Bay, living in the city for school, and then moving to the East Bay after I married my husband three years ago.

When I’m not in the classroom, I enjoy staying busy with cooking, traveling, yoga, hiking, reading, and entertaining my friends and family at my home.

I look forward to working with you to have a fantastic year in second grade!
